I fuond someone that was selling replica coins such as 1909 S vdb, 1955 DDO, and more. I asked him about the price and he told me that they were around 500- 700 a piece! Is this true or what? I would have never thought that a FAKE coin would cost SO much! Edited by Forum Mom to move to Main Coin Forum since this topic applies to modern and classic coins.

Now you've opened Pandora's box. Unless these are stamped "replica" or similar disclaimer, they are illegal to own or sell. But, people still sell them. If your acquaintance is selling them as genuine, and the buyer doesn't know any better, he/she might get that much and more for them. There are a couple of other threads on the forum about Chinese counterfeit operations. It's scary for the hobby as a whole. There are some types of 19th century counterfeits that command some hefty premiums. I know that some collectors will pay handsomely for well-done 19th century Seated dollar electrotypes. These were created using spark-erosion and unless viewed under magnification, are quite convincing. The drawback to this type of reproduction is that you can only do one side at a time. To make a complete coin, you would have to bond the obverse and reverse, leaving a seam.

yeah I saw these topics. This guy is on craigslist and he specifically lists them as fake. When I emailed him about them and their price, he told me that the two of the 7 or 8 coins were 700!! what a scammer.

OneMoreRoll........
I would pay about .02 cents for a "stamped" replica 1909 s vdb.........I don't know....I might go .03 cents....but that's certainly just my not so humble opinion!!.... That's worth nearly NOTHING to me......maybe to others......but not for my collection. If it's REAL.....it starts out at that price !...$500.00 - $700.00 would be in the range to get a genuine poor/average condition 1909 s vdb.........but certainly NOT a "fake" one.......that ain't right my friend !

Replica made after 1975 I think have to say COPY in bold letters some ware on coin but like this one here it was made in 1961 I have been told that this is 1 of 18,620 made true unsure but I have seen them graded. I may send it to Anacs soon as my W bush rebate makes it. The picture make it look dull it a lot better looking in hand it may have some cameo on it

True. I would never put one in my Dansco in place of the real thing; I'd rather stare down a hole than a copy! But I would not mind having one for conversational reasons.

I own several replicas and I use them in my completed Dansco albums. I purposely bought replicas that DO NOT look authentic and I have never paid over $10 even for a silver copy. I, of course, do own the authentic coins of replicas that I have in TPG slabs. afernbaugh

Here is a site that is selling legal copies. And the 1909 S VDB Lincolns are $13 each. I like the fact that he includes the term 'BU' on his listings. *laugh* P.S. - I've never dealt with or ordered anything from them so I've never seen the coins in person. http://members.tripod.com/royaloakmint/
