IMHO, this is a VG-8 or maybe VG-10 at best .... Thoughts and considerations?

VG8 is about the upper end on this one for me, but it's got attractive color, it's round, and it looks like the corrosion and porosity were arrested at an early stage by watchful conservation. If it had full legends and full CENT I think it would earn a VG10. Looks like a Ryder 6-N which is R3 and the scarcer of the two N-reverse "no dot" pairings. I couldn't find any LDS examples to see if the weakness at COMMON is a LDS die feature, or just due to an uneven strike; I'm leaning towards the latter. Personally, I think it's an attractive example in its grade & I'd definitely give it a home in my cabinet anyday!

When I spotted this coin in a PCGS holder, graded VF-20, my jaw dropped. Is PCGS trying to corner the TPG market for colonials? Here's the link and the pics .... Twice the grade and consequently, twice the price: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1788-Massac...AOSwImRYPvFl

Don't go around showing that to any EAC/C4 folks, they'll all drop dead of coronaries... :( That one hurts me in the heart, myself.

My thoughts, exactly, Paralyse; this, being a former EAC guy, myself. I lost confidence in PCGS some years ago, and pieces like this one stoke my fire.

Funny thing is, PCGS Photograde's VG8 and VG10 pretty much nail the actual VG8 and VG10 grades. This coin is overgraded by their OWN standards!

Coinfrog, Exo didn't expect this thread to get moved, it was originally posted in Classic Coin Forum & got moved to Grading by a mod, so it wasn't a GTG-type post.
