Is this an improvement or a big mistake? before and after cleaned. If this is posted in the wrong forum, I apologize. I'm new to this.

Depends. If you wanted a shiny coin than improvement,if you wanted it to have collector value than mistake. As a general rule,do not clean coins. No biggy in this case because the coin was nothing special to start with.

Depends what needs to be cleaned,
Almost all ancient coins and metal detector finds need cleaning, when recovered from ground burial.

Generally speaking modern coins do not need cleaning. If they are cleaned, in almost all cases a loss in value is certain.

Can be good fun when low numismatic value coins are involved, but the resulting coins are of little interest to most collectors.

Big mistake ! Leave well enough alone . That Lincoln didn't need to be cleaned . So take the hints we're not striving for shiny coins unless they are naturally Brilliant Uncirculated .

There's plenty of examples of mint state 1963's around, billions minted so no special value. Cleaning that harshly only decreases any value, just look better. Depends what used to clean, a harsh cleaner takes a slight layer of metal off, soap and water is better as a start to clean, acetone and rinse next, then use a verdigris product.

Ghastly.

Doing that to a very common coin from circulation will only get you disapproving looks. Do it to something rare and collectible and they will come after you with torches and pitchforks. (Too many Frankenstein movies as a kid.)

Neither. Nothing you did helped or hurt that common date coin.

MISTAKE! Luckily, it's a very low value coin.
