Bought some six or seven years ago and sold to me as a currency halfpenny.
1717 proofs struck in copper are usually found with the reverse upright but this example has the reverse inverted and is an exact die match for the silver proof BMC 771.
I can't find any other examples of BMC 771 in copper online so I'm guessing it must be very rare.

Yes, an interesting coin.
When you have time take a look at the BMC 771 proof in silver and see if you agree there is a die match. I can't find any records of 771 in copper anywhere.
I guess 'unique - only known example' is probably too much to hope for..

I'll break out my copy of Peck and take a look. One never knows what will show up, but this is certainly very rare!

It certainly seems to match the plate coin in Peck for 771!

Thanks, I thought so too.
I also compared it with Nicholson's 771 and one or two others I was able to find in online sales records. All are silver.

You would think that in 300 years there would talk of a copper piece somewhere.

There are plenty of 1717 proofs in copper. The point here is the one which matches mine, for dies AND an inverted reverse, is normally seen in silver.
