Going thru cents last night and had an unusual thing happen. In the last four rolls of one box and the first five rolls of the next box I found 7 Bright Red 1962-Ds. three had a few marks and I threw them in the copper bucket and I keep four. These have bright mirror finishes and will grade MS (one is probably a slider) and look as if they are out of BU rolls. These are circulated coins with Wheats included. So, my question is how did so many of a high quality coin of the same date find their way into circulated rolls and manage to be in near perfect condition? Makes me wonder if the mint does not have rolls of older uncirculated coins setting somewhere and every once in a while they have them thrown in with general circulation coins for distribution.

I have searched many boxes of pennies and I usually find one or two pennies from the 60's that would appear to be BU, so for me it is not that uncommon. I usually also fine a few from the early 70's. I always wonder where they have been. I just assume they have been hidden away in someones sock drawer or grandma's penny jar until someone decided to turn them in. It would seem unlikely that there are still original rolls like that in a bank vault somewhere, but it is possible. And since yours were all the same date, who knows. Either that or they were stolen from somebody and just spent

I usually find between 3-7 BUs from the 60s, per box of cents.

Though in a box of nickels I found 8 uncirculated 1968-s nickels in the last 2 rolls.
