Hello everyone this is my first post here on this great forum. Years ago (40+years!), my late father bought me a coin collection comprising mainly of British coins. However these pictured, were also amongst the collection. I am having a sort out, and was once told that perhaps they were Staters? Having never identified them properly, I was hoping that perhaps someone here maybe able to help me. I have scanned both sides of the coins which I hope will help. The largest coin is about 2cm and the smallest about 1.7cm Thanks in advance!

Certainly not Celtic staters, which are usually gold or occasionally silver.
My guess is that they are from the Indian sub-continent or places in Asia bordering India.

That is what I think as well.

Correct; they are all copper coins from Indian native states, or perhaps from around the Iran/Afghanistan area. I can't ID any of them as I'm away from my reference books, but I think the one with the leaf (the first coin) is from the Sikh Empire, or perhaps Kashmir.

Believe the markings are from India. Probably "dump" coins from one of their early states.

Quote: What reference books would you use to identify these coins, please ? The Krause catalogues (all four of them) for starters; I suspect all five of these coins would be found in those somewhere. Then, there's "The coins of the Indian Sultanates" by Goron and Goenka. Finally, for real mystery items, I've got Stephen Album's 1980s-vintage reassembled version of the Marsden catalogue from the mid-1800s. On inspecting the coins a bit more, My guesses would be Indian States for the first two (top left and top middle), Iran/Afghanistan for the next two (top right and bottom middle). The one at bottom right might be too worn and damaged to identify properly from those pictures and might not be identifiable at all.
