This is my very first ancient coin, any ideas what the grade and value would be? I would also appreciate any knowledge I should know on collecting Roman coins

Tlutz, I'll let the Roman specialists respond to your questions about grade and value. Welcome to the world of ancients - but be careful! Sometimes when ancients grab you, they don't let go! You might be in for the long haul.

When I first started to collect ancient coins, a coin of Aurelian was also my first coin. Ancient coin are not graded the same as US or world coins. I would call this one aF.

Hi Tlutz and welcome!

As echizento mentioned your coin is of the Roman Emperor Aurelian.
You can get higher grade coins of late roman empire at cheaper prices and is often a place to start for those interested in collecting ancient coins. It's a nice first coin.

Your coin's reverse is the VIRTVS MILITVM type: Emperor left, facing right, holding spear and globe receiving Victory from soldier opposite, facing left, holding transverse spear.
It is an Antoninianus. The mintmark for this coin is normally in the exergue (bottom field) but your coin was struck off centre so it is not visible.

Thanks for the replies, I have already started looking at other Roman coins. Is there any place I can look to have a rough idea how much these coins are worth?

They are worth what any (damn) fool will pay for them !!!
I often see (late empire) coins selling for $100 that I used to pick up for $10-12 ! I find these impossible to buy at that price !
Others often at double and triple.
The only real measure is if the purchase makes YOU happy.

Hi Tlutz,

www.coinarchives.com should give you a very good indication.
It contains prices realised from auctions.
