and we would love to see some pics as you put your set together.

I agree with getting 5 or 6 o the common dates to get started and then get a key or a couple off semi keys and repeat the process until you have completed the series.

Good Luck!

I will post some of the coins I get as the set progresses. I bought 4 dimes today but they aren't really notable, 70 left!

The problem with Barber dimes, if your looking to collect all dates and mint marks; is there are so many of them . Can become costly even in low to mid circulated grades . Most dates have 4 different mints . I quickly lost interest about 1/4 way into my set .

About starting with the key dates I think the argument is that if you wait on the key dates they will likely cost you more. Key dates rarely go down in price, mostly just up. If you get the key dates first then you're likely to spend less for the collection as a whole.

On the other hand the key dates for any Barber series are pretty serious in the way of cost. The 1895-O and the 1896-O will set you back a good chunk of change. Then the semi key dates of 1894-O, 1895, 1896-S, 1897-O, 1901-S, 1903-S, and 1904-S are no slouches either. Assuming you're not going to have any chance at an 1894-S then a nice VF set will run you about $8k, and XF set around $12k, and a mid-range AU set of Barber dimes will end up costing in the ball park of $20k

So it looks like you may be looking to put together a VG set. Nice and manageable. I'd think you'd be able to put one together for around $2k or so, with the 95-O making up about 30% of the total spent. Curious, what are your plans to store/display the set? Perhaps a Dansco album? Or maybe in air-tights?

I will keep them in the cardboard holders for now, and will buy certified-like slab holders later on. Those holders cost more than a dollar each so I will hold off until it is necessary. I plan on buying the key dates certified so I won't have to get holders for them and maybe some of the semi's. Just curious, do the 2x2 cardboard holders pose a threat to coins?

2x2 cardboard holders don't in themselves pose a threat but there are a couple of things to be aware of. The staples can scratch other coins if you stack the coins or put them together in a box, etc. so you need to either use a stapler that leaves the staples flat or if you use a standard stapler always follow up with something like pliers to flatten them. You can get a special stapler pretty cheap from a variety of coin supply sellers. The other issue to be aware of is when you go to remove the coin from the 2x2 at any point you have to take special care not to scratch the coin against the staples when you pull it apart. Myself I alway use scissors to cut carefully on one side so that there's no chance to accidently encounter a staple as the coin comes out.

Barber dimes are a great way into the entire series of Barber coins.

I'll watch your progress to see if I should start one in the future. I was able to put together a set of mercury and silver Roosevelt dimes through junk bin.. mostly 13-15x face a year or 2 ago. I think I bought small lot on ebay once closer to 19-20x. Just had to buy the 21 and 21d, only hole left and willl likely remain that way is the 16-d.... I have them stored in a Dansco dimes album, which I think I could squeeze another page or 2 in which is why I'm thinking of starting barbers... my go to LCS retired over a year ago, so my cherry picking silver buckets are over.. haven't found another store that will let me spend an hour digging through.
