I am about to start a Barber dime set, and it will be my first set of classic coins. However I am unsure if I should go for the key dates like 1895 O first so I can get them cheaper than I would later on in the set. I don't have a large budget for coins (most of it goes towards currency for me) and am wondering if it is worth it. Thanks for reading :)

It isn't worth doing Barber dimes in my opinion.

I don't have enough to spend to do a Barber dime set but, my thought is to start with the key dates. Otherwise, you may end up having a set missing the keys if you can't put any more into it or grow bored!

If you get the keys first, then decide you don't want to pursue the set, then you still have something worth holding onto/selling.

I hope that makes sense.

I've always thought that buying the key date first was kinda silly. Why not buy a few first and get to know if you like the series before dropping good money on a coin that you could potentially lose interest in.

Really great advice. I never could figure out why people say buy the expensive stuff first. As above states, if you do invest and loose interest, may be difficult to get your money back.

When I started my Barber dime set about 10 years back, I worked from the bottom up. It's not a overly expensive set in lower grades, but it quickly spirals upwards in the higher grades. I chose to go for the less expensive lower grade, or I probably wouldn't have been able to afford completing my set. I later attempted & failed the Barber quarter & half sets, now those are difficult & costly.
Best of luck.
Rest in Peace

A set is nice if you can stay in a relatively small range of grades.

If the keys are out of your price range at VF-30, as an example, adjust your grade range to meet your probable expense range.

Learn the series with common dates and the knowledge you gain will pay off when you start buying keys and semi-keys.

I have started a toner set, by accident; I saw a couple of beautiful coins at a show and couldn't pass them up, they were AU58, now if I ever see others, I'll definitely be picking them up! Its a casual set I guess

Any specific reason why you chose Barbers? I don't know a lot about them however I thought I read somewhere the design wasn't very popular. Looking at prices for "good" condition on the coin study site, the set does seem affordable though (definitely not cheap but possible). They list the 95-o at $242 in good condition.

As a collector you are collecting what you like, not what others think you should collect. Just remember, knowledge is everything! Before you start your journey on this set, I would recommend your first purchase be an informative book on Barber dimes.

Thanks for all of the advice guys! I wanted to put together a set of Barber dimes because they are older than Mercury dimes and are still affordable. I also like the design and the fact that there aren't many ultra-rare key dates.
I also found one while metal detecting, but it doesn't have a readable date. Thanks
