hi,

so I found my first coin, I'm not entirely sure what it is, but it looks roman? on one side it has what looks like a roman head with helmet on (small but just visible) and other side like a shield with a cross. There is writing around the edge on both sides which I can't make out. Any help would be much appreciated. Its proverbly nothing special to anyone but with it being my first find I am pretty excited about this :)

@firewalk, better pics would help, but I'm thinking that you may have a Nuernburg jeton.

Cool find! How did you find it - metal detector?

I think I see the design and (parts of) legend associated with Nuremberg counter jetons, so as my initial guess I would say that it's probably one of those. I'm very far from an expert, however.

hi thank you for the replies. my camera is not the best on my phone I'm afraid. I have just search the Nuernburg jeton, and the image is identical to one that came up with the cross on one side. What sort of age would this be if it was? am I right in saying it isn't actually a coin but some kind of counting token? also its german? which is strange, I found it on a field beside the old roman road leading to york in england

Very nice find, especially for your first time looking. There are multiple threads here on CCF that you may find interesting. You can use the search function, but here is one to get you started.

I'm loving it moxking, totally new to it the village I live in there used to be a roman settlement/fort, so there is plenty to go at. the field I found this coin on I initially thought was a roman coin, never new what a Nuernburg jeton was until now! can't wait to get back out again with the MD
