When the die wears out after many, many times being smashed, the surface metal moves outwards, causing that ring under the rim and the letters to curl up and distort. Very common, most die errors don't increase value by much, not a real market for it because errors are so common, just many different kinds. Now mint "errors" , doubled dies, repunched dates and mintmarks, there's where some values come in.
