Use the Search feature to look up items of interest. Using the Advanced option will also help you dial in on more specific details and you will find the better trigger words to assist in that effort. Your question is a common one and there are a number of threads here that are worth reading through. Not all threads are equal, so the more you read on a subject will help you to grow your knowledge-base.

For me, three things to keep in mind about the 1970S varieties. LIBERTY being weaker struck on the Small Date. Also, the inward pointing loop of the 9 as if it is closer to being a loop. The level 7 with the rest of the date. From my perspective, the 0 on the Large Date floats off to the Northeast in the date spread.

Finding a Small Date in the wild is a real rarity here, but not impossible. At least a couple a year are found by the CRH enthusiasts. I haven't been lucky yet in that capacity. I had to buy mine.

Enjoy the forums and remember...a Search is a terrible thing to waste. Good luck!
Rest in Peace

to the family!

Rackster is right. I use these four indicators:

1). BERTY is very weak on small S cents
2). The tail of the 7 is even with the lower of 0(small S)
3). The top of 7 is exactly even with the 9 & 0 and isn't tilted, but straight vertical. (Small S)
4). The top of the 0 has a small point on the large S but is rounded on the small S version.

I have yet to find a sm date in over 750,000 pennies searched. When you do, you've really hit the jackpot! I think every pennysearcher in the US is looking for that animal! Good luck!
Rest in Peace
