So I've never had a reason to post in the Ancient forum. My father-in-law was a prolific antique collector with seemingly no boundaries. Once he passed his wife, my wife's mom, put us in charge of ... dealing ... with everything. We have learned a lot since then about a lot of things but I know that this one is way over my head. In the collection there are items that are authentic that are dated bc. There are religious relics that are seven hundred years old an authenticated. At this point we do not assume that anything is a fake. Every. Single. Item. must be check for authenticity because, well, just because...

Could someone tell me what this thing is, or what it's supposed to be it if it's not real?

Thanks :)

This coin is from Sri Lanka from the Chola Empire circa 11th century. These coins are called octupus king because of the shape of the king and throne. Not sure which king it is.

Palouche, oh my gosh, yes. I know I had thanked you, because my daughter was sitting with me at the time helping write the post (she's seven). I'm not sure why it didn't actually get posted.

Id'ing from Queen Lilavati was spot on.

The first rule of antiques is "just because it's old doesn't mean it's valuable".

Everyone I show this to is amazed that this little coins could be almost 800 years old. They're equally amazed, as I am, that it's only worth twenty bucks...

Thanks again!

People think ancient coins have to be high dollar because they are so old. Fortunately that's not the case at all. You might want to check out the forum topics here where people share what they bought at various price points.

And kudos for you to sharing the coin and your research with your daughter.

jskirwin, it is VERY fortunate for the collector that ancient coins are not particularly expensive - not so much for the owner of said coin hoping to sell them :D
