Hey guys,
I was looking for your opinions on this 1983 Lincoln Cent that appears to have doubling in the word States on the reverse side. Let me know what you think.

MD, this is what true doubling looks like, note it's not shelf-like, more rounded.

Lol. I took it out of the 2x2 and weighed it and it's 2.6 grams. I also attached another image.

The other question I have is what causes the shelving like that?

It is MD and not a doubled die. The 1983 doubled die reverse is much more prominent, in ONE CENT especially.

Edit: coop is probably the go-to guy to answer the shelving effect question.

The die creates the devices on it's downstroke, then if it's loose in it's retainer, it shifts horizontally on the upstroke and alters them. It's Strike Doubling.

Your welcome. In all fairness though, there are other theories. I just think the one I stated is the most logical. It is known for sure that it stems from a loose die because when the mint employee tightens it, it stops the Strike Doubling. I just can't believe the other main theory that says it goes up and down twice.
