I was watching T.V. recently and saw a commercial for a product called tarnex. It claimed that you could use it on your coins in your coin collection. Naturaly I'm sceptic of this but would like to hear what you have to say. Has anyone actoully used it?

Hi ojo
basically any type of cleaning of collectable coins is a no no.
Tarnex is an acid and removes all of the natural patina ,, To answer your question I have used tarnex ,on jewelry, it really works well for that application, but do not use it on your coins !!!

That commercial makes me cringe... I certainly wouldn't use it- about ten years ago when I worked at a drug store we had a woman come in throwing a fit because the Tarnex she bought at our store "ate" her silver. She made quite a scene, threatened to sue the store and everything. Rachel [:p]

I actually tried some modern coins, years ago, and I spent them over the next few days. What does that tell you. Even the cashier had to look twice to see what I was giving her! TARNEX---NEVER, not on a collectable coin!

Tarnex is one of those often used chemicals that many coin "finders" use. I see it on a pretty regular basis, and it kills the value so fast.
I think that I have some tarnex around here somewhere, ....I do.
Let me load some before and after pics, and let you see the results LIVE.

Here is an example of Before/After Tarn-X on a Peace silver dollar that National Dealer posted. Tarn-X before and afterNotice the flat look of the coin after. Tarn-X literally removes a layer of metal from the coin.
