I thoroughly understand that a hobby is different than a business and expect a mark up. However, when I go through the "cherry picker" bins and bargain bins and find something different, is using ebay sold the easiest way or is it ok to ask the dealer. I don't want to be rude and look everything up online but I don't want to be stupid either
Ask the dealer if you want to and trust them. You should go to coin shows with knowledge of your own. Get an idea of prices before hand on things you want to buy but are not on your want list.

Ok, Went to the numismedia website. Found out they are fair market value. good.. I like the idea of having it on my phone to look at while at the show.

So, Has anyone worked with the numismedia app for android? do you need a subscription? or is only the website free for your phone. I got confused while trying to find the app download command.

Might be a good idea to go around and inspect everything and then decide on what you are interested in attempting to purchase. Easy to overspend at early tables and then see something that you really like but can no longer afford.

As I say, leave your wallet at home and concentrate on learning, comparing prices, and deciding what you really want to collect.

BTW, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP!

I have to really make sure it is a good experience because my husband is coming and he is not too sure about this hobby of mine. He says he doesn't quite understand why you pay more money for a smaller piece of money i.e. a coin.

He also doesn't understand why I just do if for fun and not necessarily for investing.

Eventually I just told him that it is because it makes me happy and it's like collecting thimbles, shot glasses, or baskets, but it takes up less room. He's glad I don't collect baskets.

I agree, but there is no reason why you cannot spend an hour or two doing this, looking around and taking it in before spending some money.

If you left your wallet at home you may end up regretting a missed opportunity.

Patience is key, but waiting until the next show may be taking it too far, especially if you take the time ahead of the show to prepare yourself.
Rest in Peace

I think it's great that your husband is going with you. Mine came along when I went to my first show and he has taken me to every show since. He's sort of interested in coins.

It helps if they know how to shop for coins -- especially around your birthday or anniversary.

Actually, being your first show, leave your wallet at home. I'm serious. Just look and learn.

Really great advice.

I agree with jbuck.

I think caution is advised -- always. But I have a collection of coins with animals on them and I got nearly all of them from junk bins. Lots of fun for a little bit of money. So have some fun.

Waiting for a report on your first show....

If you have to wait until your second coin show to consider buying something, then we have not done our job.

I love, love this one. Even though it is dark, you can see all the feather details.
