mnknight77 Valued Member United States 87 Posts	Posted 03/27/2017 2:51 pm Although, the 3 pix above were my biggest unplanned purchases, I did get quite a few to fill books and the coin proof set was 5.00. (I know a nephew who would like that.) I was stressed at first, but my hubby told me that not to worry about over paying for something, that as a newby that was expected and to just have fun. So, I relaxed and as I said, I was the last customer to leave. I had a budget going in; withdrew it in cash so I was sure not to overspend. I did bring my debit/credit cards but didn't need them. I didn't haggle, but several gave me a discount when I would buy 4-5 coins at a time. I bought some as low as .04 and then the highest I paid was for the above dollars which were 20.00 each. Only one table charged me too much but I think she was just confused... was having problems with the calculator... I think she was in her 80's. I got a few supplies; knowing exactly what I wanted with those it was a great way to break the ice. I found out who were the heads of the clubs near by and heard a few tall tales. Entered a raffle for a beautiful MS70 1/10 gold coin and several silver eagles... didn't win but hey, they let us in for free so I figured it was an entrance fee... I was invited to come back to several more coin shows this spring and lots of club meetings especially when I started asking about grading. Thanks again everyone for your help!! I wore comfortable shoes like everyone said but was still dog tired; I'll have to bring protein bars next time. 2. Came home and took a nap and then I stayed up til 4am this morning enjoying the purchases. Going on Saturday would have been better so I could look at the coins on Sunday before the beginning of week. 3. Having hubby there was great! He could drive and he was happy reading his book. Having him there, giving me permission to make a spending mistake and remembering this is a hobby and not a business, was fabulous! 4. Next time I want to plan on buying something special, specific and nice that has nothing to do with my book collections... like a small gold coin or something. hmmm 5. Buying at coin shows is better than ebay for less than proof or BU coins. Looking at the coins, I can better tell if there is any cleaning damage or pvc damage and there is usually several choices of the same kind of coin side by side. 6. Joining the raffle for the local club opened up doors and acceptance. Plan on that... I'm glad I started with a small local show!! To Do List: 1. I thought I was prepared for what I wanted to buy but alas, I need an inventory system to know exactly what I have at home. 2. I have the wrong grading photograph book. I need the one with colored pictures. hmmmm Amazon I think would help with that... 3. Join a club asap for help with grading... I had a great time and the forum helped me to find the courage to boldly step into a new dimension of this hobby! As usual, you guys rock!! Maybe this evaluation will help another newbie! People get rightfully concerned about over-paying for coins. I have, however, over-paid for any number of things. You learn and move on. It's great that you made some contacts. The clubs can be fun. If you have a smart phone you can download PCGS photograde. It's free. It isn't perfect but it's handy. Thanks for posting pics of your new coins. Report this Post to the Staff
