I believe this looks like a newer type Black Beauty. There are several dings in it (bust and dome)that show no shiny metal coloring underneath. Has anyone else run across one? I have a 1959-D Black Beauty and they are very similar.

I'd say corrosion, it was left to the elements. Note the rough appearance of the surface vs the luster of the other..

The other one in the photo is just a normal 2002 nickel for comparison, not the 1959-D.

I like the look of it but I don't think it is a black beauty. Look at the bay for pics of slabbed black beauties.

The color is right but there is no luster. I'm going to go with environmental damage. Maybe it was buried for a while or maybe someone heated it with a torch.

I posted 3 nickels that were also discolored. I wonder how close the one is to yours

All appear to be environmental issues causing the darker toning.

I posted a thread a while ago on my search for a complete 'blackened' Jefferson set ... just like these. They are not unusual at all to find while roll hunting.
