I got this '77 proof set in a lot purchase of other sets. I have no idea what happened except a lot of heat. Even the hinged cover is warped. I'm glad because I can add the nickel to my album and I guess holder the rest. Another plus is adding a third Ike to my collection. I love taking things apart to see how they're put together and this will be a first. Based on the title, I thought you were going to say you're sending in the CAM cent to be slabbed. What's going on with that dime?

Quote: What's going on with that dime? As far as I can tell, the dime is unaffected. It's just the plastic casing warping/receding from heat. Quote: Uh, that is like the best part! I was hoping you'd find this jbuck. Truth be told, this is only one of three Ikes I own. Two are proofs and the other is a circulated Bicentennial. @Druu I don't think I'll be breaking out that '99 CAM proof anytime soon. I need to get my hands on a '98!

I had a proof set from when I was a kid that was so scratched and scuffed from years of being owned by a kid. When I moved a year ago I noticed the cover had cracked so I broke it open and was so glad I did. The coins themselves were so stunning but were hidden by years of scuffed and scratched plastic. I put them all in airtights. Don't regret it.

I used to buy proof sets and take them apart for the coins to be placed in my Albums. I stopped when they started adding those baby dollar coins.

The deed has been done. I have to admit it was fairly easy and I got a little joy out of it. However, I'm not going to make a habit of it. The nickel will soon be added to my album to become the first proof!

I guess I had a little help from the cracks already present but I used this feature of my Leatherman: I was able to get the hook under the reverse side edge and push down with the point on the front to crack it up between coins. It didn't work on the bottom of the case (too wide). I then chose some interior points between coins to smack with the same tip. (These first steps were done with it wrapped in a plastic bag to avoid flying shards) After I had created enough breaks, I took it out of the plastic bag and used the same tool to pry the remaining pieces up. What I was left with was essentially the reverse side clear plastic holding coins. I prepared a soft surface and bent the plastic to remove the coins one at a time while avoiding them falling on one another. One plastic break happened while doing that. That's about as thorough as I can be. I tried the actual pliers of the Leatherman on corners but, it had no impact. It is a little funny that I used a can opener to open this case.

Quote: Sounds like you need to work on your Ike set. For some unknown reason, I like these proof sets. I got a few later ones in today ('00, '01 and '02) but, to be honest, I'm not really a fan of the small dollar coins. I'm now thinking of creating an Ike set but with proofs only (for now). Being the last large dollar (some being silver is a bonus) and having a fairly short run, it's enticing. Plus, if I'm going to crack sets to actually put them together in one place, I can add 7 more proof nickels to my album that have dedicated holes. Hmmmm....
