I am new to coin collecting and everything I have I found in pocket change. I have found that most coins have errors. I am just wondering what errors are worth keeping. Any input on these coins would be appretiated. The errors I am looking at is the corner of his mouth and the corner of his eye and the P

The eye and mouth corners look like die chips but, the images are pretty fuzzy zooming in.

The P mintmark looks "filled" like the very small center part of the die on the "P" broke and left an incomplete letter.

Keep in mind that the dies that create the images on coins are the reverse and that center hole in the mintmark is a very small protrusion on the die that is prone to breaking with use.

Like Spruett said, broken posts in mint marks aren't that uncommon. I'm intrigued by the other die chips on your coin though. Can you try to get a sharper picture? Ideally, zoomed in from the top rim to Roosevelt's chin. It could be the lighting, but I think I see a die chip on his cheek too. There's an out of place line on his forehead that could be a die crack or a scratch. If it's a die crack that connects the die chips and reaches the rim, then you've found a "Spike Head" that can be catalogued by Cuds on Coins. I don't see one catalogued for 1989; more info here: http://cuds-on-coins.com/roosevelt-...946-present/

ya I only got a phone camera. Its a preety good camera but these are as good as the pics get. I did look for the out of place line. At first look I could see it but when I shine light and look with a magnifieing glass I dont see any thing. I guess the main thing I'm wondering about, are these the kinds of things that make them more valuble. If errors like these are a dime a dozen not much point in keeping it. I get the filling of the P is a commen one, but the mouth and eye?

You have a lot of glare from your light source. Maybe a lower watt bulb or have the light hit the coin at a different angle would help. You can also use the Image Optimizer here to crop the pic to the coin. That would make it larger. Good pics are important for good answers.

Sidewayz

They are probably die chips. I see many of them. Some locations of the chips do make them more interesting though.

I agree. But that said if we were at Denny's drinking coffee, I would gladly exchange .20 cents for a closer magnified look at this one later. Doubled your money in that type scenario.

Seriously the smaller die chips around the eyes, nose, mouth and chin are seen quite often here. Larger ones considered IDB's are not! So the larger the better if looking for a bigger premium.

Good eye spotting this one and may be worth keeping for when you find its big brother for a development comparison or when we meet for coffee. Thanks, Doug.

If it's a spike head, there would be more of a demand for it. You could try lighting from various angles to find a die crack to the rim. I would definitely hold onto it. Cuds on Coins also catalogues IDBs (interior die breaks), so even if it's not a spike head it may be worthwhile.
