That's one heck of a heist. Can't a museum with a $1M (face) "coin" afford security guards and 24x7 surveillance?

I experienced a major coincidence on this topic concerning the stolen "coin": http://goccf.com/t/284258I'm left wondering why there wasn't better security surrounding a $4.5M piece. Night Guards? Like I said in the other topic, the RCM should have made it heavier. Can you imagine the operation it would take to have stolen the Australian 1000kg gold coin when it existed? Poor planning and poor security for an untraceable gigantic chunk of pure gold.

THAT will make the Perth Mint about the security of their 1000 kilogram (1 tonne) gold coin that is on public display. I have stood right next to it, and you can rub your hands all over it, if you want to! The coin is about one metre in diameter, and about 10 centimetres thick.

This gets weirder and weirder. They carried a ladder up on to the elevated tracks and used it to get up to a window to break in. (How often does a train go by? No alarms on the window?) Then they say they used a wheelbarrow to carry it off. (Where did the wheelbarrow come from? They surely didn't carry it up the ladder with them. Once they got in did they they go open one of the doors and bring it in? If so once again, no alarms?) Then after wheeling it out of the building they followed the tracks and descended into a park on a rope. (Descended on a rope while carrying a 220 pound gold coin?)

Sounds like a 2 man job..... Batman and Spider-Man perhaps.

What? How!? That is the worst security possible, short of leaving all the doors open.

Two people handling 220 lbs is plausible but, the whole wheelbarrow, rope, ladder thing confounds me.
They make it sound as if practically anyone could have pulled this off. I'm seriously questioning the security at this point.
At least cameras? They're cheap! No guards around a $4.5M chunk of pure gold?
I guess you reap what you sow.

Inside job perhaps? As others have stated it's probably going to be melted down into small chunks so that they won't get caught with it since gold is untraceable when recast. It's a pity such a nice piece got stolen. Maybe museums will learn to improve security and utilize more cameras and countermeasures to prevent theft, heck even lock it up at night in a safe when it's not on display.

Did the price of gold crash? By a penny or two?

One wonders what will happen when the thieves start cutting up their "coin" and discover that it is a gold-plated fake.
