BERLIN (AP) — Berlin police say thieves broke into the German capital's Bode Museum and made off with a massive 100-kilogram (221-pound) gold coin worth millions.

Spokesman Stefen Petersen said thieves apparently entered through a window about 3:30 a.m. Monday, broke into a cabinet where the "Big Maple Leaf" coin was kept, and escaped with it before police arrived.

A ladder was found by nearby railway tracks.

The museum says the coin is in the Guinness Book of Records for its purity of 999.99/1000 gold. It has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on one side and maple leaves on the other.

Mintage of only five... I suspect when these thieves are done, surviving mintage will be four...

The only way to get rid of this is to hack it into small pieces and melt it. Unless they are stupid, which is a possibility.

At least it would easy to identify if found in one piece, which others have pointed out, is probably not a smart thing to do.

What a horribly stupid and selfish thing to do. Destroy a major historical treasure because you can realize the value of the gold.

My guess is that they could nibble off a little piece if necessary....and another little piece for the added insurance ..

My guess is that's already in progress. If they were smart enough to pull off this heist, then they would surely have a plan on how to dispose and cash out.
You would think . .

that's got to be the perfect crime. Once that huge thing is melted into ingots or rounds, totally untraceable. way smarter than stealing art or even cash. I hate these thieves, but sort of admire them too.
Rest in Peace

The fineness of this gold makes it hard to trace in cutdown quantities. The purity may come into question since almost all trace elements like silver and tin have been scrubbed. If these thieves were really smart, they would be adding some trace elements back in to smelted product, just enough to mask point of origin

North Carolina theft:
It seems they caught some of the thieves who stole gold bars from a truck in North Carolina last year, but have not recovered much of the gold since they theorize much of it was cut up, melted, recast or made in to jewelry.

Not to condone the theft, but isn't it just a big bullion piece anyways?

At the time they were made, it seemed to be a publicity stunt to create a world record sized NCLT coin.

I think it was more of the 5 9s milestone that it was made wasn't it?
