I recently picked up this 1873 open-3, and I'm wondering if it is a FS-1301(009)or Fletcher 106, whichever you prefer. The underlying small 3 is unmistakable, but it is in a slightly different position than the examples I've seen, and I'm having trouble with the secondary 1. There is a blob of metal to the east of the primary 1, but nothing I could positively identify as a secondary 1. So....is it or isn't it? I'll let you guys weigh in

Sorry dude, I couldn't help myself. Oh, and I'm no help with the coin either. Again, sorry.

It isn't FS-1301(009)/ Fletcher 106, I see what appears to be an underlying 3, but it is in the wrong position to be the known 3/small 3. It's too low.

Doesn't mean it can't be something new though. Needs to be seen by an expert in hand, not just images.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. The deeper I get into die varieties, the murkier the waters seem to get, but I'm fascinated nonetheless. It's a bit maddening at times, though. The difference between holding a $100 coin or a $10,000 coin in your hand lies in some pretty close judgement calls, and the parameters they are judged by don't seem all that clear. It's like those nightmare dads that make arbitrary rules and enforce them with an iron hand; what's fine today might be out of bounds tomorrow.

Update: Sent to Howard Spindell for evaluation. I don't know if anyone goes back and looks at these after the first few days, but I will post the results when he weighs in, in case someone besides me is interested. I dont have that '67 Chevelle SS Convertible in the driveway just yet, but I'm hoping!
