Looking through some old folders, came across this:

What-Do-You-Think-,-Black-Beauty?

What-Do-You-Think-,-Black-Beauty?

Has everything, blackish/gray uniform color, original luster looks like the annealing error to me...have it next to normal from era, What you all think?

Edit: I had put these folders up many months ago, checked the rest, guess what...

What-Do-You-Think-,-Black-Beauty?

and baby makes two!

Very interested in learning more from example. Do you recall if this how they looked going into the folder or is this an after effect? Thanks, Doug.

Halo1st: Not sure, over the past few years I've bought partially filled/empty folders in auction lots. Been filling up the holes best as can. I don't recall if I put it up or not, at the time didn't know about the annealing error to recognize. Don't think just one year + in Whitman folder would cause any "toning". These two seem to fit the parameters for that error.

Nice coinsA member on this forum did a scan on one of these and found it contained trace amounts of cobalt which is associated with nickel ore but usually smelted out , I have some Canadian nickel coins with this tone

Oldmike, that just might be the reason, poor smelting. No one's ever determined the why yet I don't think.

Did we (US) and you Cannucks buy materials from the same source back then? Be interesting to find out.
