How is this coin supposed to be oriented?

Empire-Of-Japan-1882-1-Sen-Coin-Rotated-Die?

With 1 SEN positioned on bottom, the reverse looks like above.

Somebody suggested to me the dot to the right of 1 SEN is supposed to be on the bottom of the obverse. I this accurate? Doing it that way does make the reverse line up.

Thanks again...Mont

I think the obverse picture is correct, just the reverse is rotated on the coin. The "1" on the reverse should be horizontal and at the top.

Either that, or the dot to the LEFT of "1 SEN" should be the obverse bottom center point to make the reverse correct?

This is what Numista shows:

The reverses I have seen Have the "1" horizontal...with flower (round part on reverse) on top centered...but it also show the obverse oriented the way I have it.

You are correct about the dot to the left. If I put it on bottom of obverse it lines up reverse. If I put the right one....like the another person said... then it is rotated by 90 degrees left.

I had to go check but, I have an 1877 Sen and it's oriented as Numista shows it.

It appears you have a rotated die.

Thanks for the pics! I was interested because I was just trying to attribute some Japanese and Chinese coins I have and got confused when my 20th-Century Krause didn't include these.

Duh!

It is interesting to me that these have English on them and later sen coins do not. I haven't researched it but, I assume it has to do with imperialism.

The teens and 20's sens I have make way more sense as far as orientation without the English part.

I think though, that having "1 SEN" at the bottom makes the Dragon image correctly oriented.

I hope someone else contributes to this. It seems Asian coins don't have a huge following here despite how many there are and how long they've been around.

As described in the other forum, I'll repost the same thing

This is a common alignment "error". The standard was not there at that time.

I have gone through at least 100+ of such coins and here is a good example to compare there. They are not the best but you get the idea

Empire-Of-Japan-1882-1-Sen-Coin-Rotated-Die?

Empire-Of-Japan-1882-1-Sen-Coin-Rotated-Die?

Genuine error coin exist and is quite rare.

Empire-Of-Japan-1882-1-Sen-Coin-Rotated-Die?

The standard way of aligning is using the two dots before and after 1 sen. Some times the dot in between "Great Japan" and "Meiji xx year" is used for alignment. But of course, there are times when the wrong dot is used. The last coin is a perfect example of this.

In this case, the second description fits this the best.

If you are curious, please feel free to view my collection at omnicoin - I've represented the die orientation of many Japanese coins as faithfully possible.
