I just recently acquired a 1880 5 Dollar that appears to have a over strike? Maybe someone can help? Here are assorted pictures

Looks like a die crack to me.

It does look like a cracked die caused this. If the coin had something like a piece of wire or fiber "over struck" then it would be excused and not raised above the surface.

Looks like a die crack to me as well, nice half eagle!

Agree, die crack, and a rather large one. These are often seen on silver, nickel, and copper coins but are much less common on gold pieces. It might add some appeal to the right buyer.

The coin has strong AU detail with remaining luster. I don't see any obvious hairlines from abrasive cleaning but it looks excessively shiny, particularly in the angled photos. It has likely been dipped in an attempt to brighten it up.

Very cool! Id have picked up that bad boy!, also!

And from what ive seen, it looks like a die crack to me also... I guess gold is very soft and so dies didnt break as often as when minting copper/silver/nickel
