It is called a counterstrike. People would and still do this for a variety of reasons. On a coin this old it could have been some sort of advertisement.
This does not add any sort of premium to the coins as it is generally considered Post Mint Damage ( PMD). There is a thread here for people to post the ones they find. Some collectors get excited about these, I don't. I prefer to damage my coins by sending them through a souvenir penny machine at some scenic landmark.
When I was a kid we sometimes put a penny on the street car tracks. They got flattened, not as fancy as amusement parks, but the street car gave them the same basic shape.
