This is one of the uglier Shield nickels that I have run into. It may be overgraded. But it was 20% below wholesale bid. Was it worth it? Thoughts on grade and problems appreciated. TPG grade and price paid in 48.

Am I seeing doubling on the EN..S of CENTS? Or is that jus MD of the day?

Yes, I see it too. It seems common in early nickels. You see clear doubling on the 5 here in my 1867 example.

I'd grade this XF-45. And that doubling looks like "Longacre doubling". So hard to find a "with rays" with the reverse stars and rays struck up.

these guys are typically weakly struck especially the reverse and shield area. the leaf detail is a little strong for XF as this is where you would normally see the first signs of wear so I'm at AU50. there are some light swipe marks on both the obverse from 4 through 6 oclock and reverse that could indicate a light cleaning. details designation? not 100% certain on this one.

Paid $265. I think wholesale bid is $325 for ms62. Thought it was overgraded but I had it at about au55. I like these coins. Some day I'll run into a well struck one. Might have overpaid for this one.
