I see these at times and I call them die cracks. However after looking more into errors it seems as though I might be wrong. What are they and how does it happen?

Could you direct us to what you're referring to? I often see die cracks and small die chips on the upper left portion of the shield above E PLURIBUS UNUM. I believe chips/cracks there is one of the die markers for some of the more significant shield cent DDRs.

If you are referring to the shield, probably a die chip.

Only thing I see is betwixt the E & P, looks like a crack but because it is rounded where it hits the P may be a chip or plating bubble.?

Get pix right! It friggin" hurts!

In that area of the shield (E Pluribus Unum) it is a common area for die gouges, but since they normally rum diagonally I expect what you are referring to is a plating issue. Use a tooth pick softly pressing down and see if there is any movement. At any rate it is interest that it as a straight line.

I tweaked your photo a bit - might help to identify the issue.

Keep in mind the EPU is incuse. So any coin contact will look raised. But I'm guessing it is incuse on the coin. (coin contact) Because the devices are not raised, contact looks like it passes behind the device, but it isn't as deep as the incuse devices. When you rotate the coin 90 degrees then you will see that the EPU is incuse and the contact mark.
