While I'm hard-pressed to think of an earlier "prison" token, I can think of a more grim piece ... Thomas Paine, hanging by the neck. Aaaaagggh !!

Love the conders, the history, the artistry the beauty, though.

I've discovered that this turns out to be something more of a political statement rather than an actual token to be used in commerce - the "residence" of Henry Symonds, William Winterbotham, James Ridgway and David Holt was in fact Newgate Gaol, where the year before they'd been confined on charges of sedition.
