A recent item I won in an auction on
ebay came in today and I'm excited about how it's turned out.
The auction that I won is item
#120236723486.
I was planning on buying a Roosevelt Whitman Folder anyway so basically I got the folder with the coins in them for the same price... (the folder is as good as new)
ANYWAY... My question is this...
Most of the silver coins in the album have begun to tone. A couple have toned rather nastily a couple have toned nicely.
Anyway... After going through the set and pulling all the junk silver out I was left with 5 unc examples and 1 AU. I headed to my local coin shop to trade in the junk silver and pick up some missing pieces for my set. I took along the album to ask the owners opinion on one of the six dimes I was going to keep (1956 P). I'm not a fan of toning and prefer blast white silver coins, but he loves toned coins so I knew he'd be the right person to ask.
Long story short... He said that this was a coin which NEEDED to be graded but that the grading services were having a hard time dealing with toned coins right now. He said he's had 3 MS coins in with ANACS since January that haven't come back yet and one with PCGS that's been gone since early Feb. Mentioned something about not having enough graders that were competent to grade toned coins and the overall emphasis of most of the TPGers focusing on Modern issues.
I trust this guy and put alot of faith into his opinions. He's always been a straight shooter with me and has sold me SEVERAL coins at well below retail and has taught me Immensely (like today he sold me an AG3 1909-S Lincoln for $20).
So... has anyone else been having trouble with Toned coins and TPGs? Or is he just having some bad luck?
On a side note he offered me $75 on the spot for the dime as he thinks it'll grade MS65FB and he loves the toning.
My scan isn't very good, the coin has full mint luster and no bag marks. It's toned a really bizare iradescent purplish/reddish sort of color (I don't know what those things are on the cheek... they're not on the coin.)
