The edge is marked "PAYABLE AT RICHARD LONG'S LIBRARY" with a closely spaced dot, "X", and then another dot serving as a spacer between the beginning and end of this incuse inscription. Richard Long was a purveyor of books. The coat of arms is that of the Borough of Sandwich within which Deal was at the time located. In 1823, William Cobbett wrote, "Deal is a most villainous place. It is full of filthy-looking people." Despite its infamous past as a rough and tumble port, today the town aspires to reinvent itself as a quaint seaside resort. NumisRob Bedrock of the Community United Kingdom 17896 Posts	Posted 04/07/2017 03:25 am Lucky Cuss - that's a beautiful specimen, and puts mine to shame, although mine does have a rim clip! I picked mine up for the grand sum of five pence in a local Antique Shop (long since closed) in 1973. It was my first 18th-century English token! It looks better in hand than in the photos, but is a dark chocolate brown colour, and I had to adjust the photos to show more detail! Deal is around 25 miles from where I live. It's a pleasant little seaside town.
