Seller called her EF, so I got her for an EF price BIN. Thoughts on grade? This coin blows the one in my type set out of the water with a nuke. I'm excited to get her in hand.

I think it could slide into AU but I don't follow the series very closely.

The sharpness is AU-58 or better, but the over exposure in the photo makes hard to say much more.

I would guess low au dets cleaned. Given the level of wear, I think the red showing through is from gunk that was removed in a recent cleaning. Seems to have some verdigris in the lower reverse. Rims look weakly struck and a little beat up. Looks like a coin that saw a little, albeit rough circulation.

Nope, no cleaning. Not a single hairline on this coin. AU coppers can have bits of red. Have you ever searched through a bucket of wheat cents?

Not all cleaning produces hairlines. This is a 166 year old coin. The only way that this coins would be red is if there was something covering the red spots that prevented oxidation. That protective gunk was removed. That would explain the red areas.

Well, the color proves that it wasn't dipped. The only forms of cleaning that would satisfy your claims are harmless to the coin (acetone bath, etc.) and thus would not get a details grade.
Also, look at AU/MS old copper. There are PLENTY of examples of 100+ year-old copper coins with residual red luster (and 200 and 300-year old coppers as well). How many do you want me to post? And meny of these were certainly not covered in gunk. I am not seeing how your logic proves anything here.

Those were stored in ways that limited oxidation. This is clearly a circulated coin. Show me a circulated 166 year old coin that is still red.
