I'm such a balloon head for not checking the stock before venturing back into coin collecting. I've been involved in the financial markets for many years but I blew this one. Why I didn't think to check the stock? Utter stupidity.

Stock price is doing very well. It has a high dividend yield and is rumored to be borrowing money to maintain those dividends. Not the time to buy IMO.

Too bad there is no stock chart of NGC to juxtapose with PCGS. Quote: It has a high dividend yield and is rumored to be borrowing money to maintain those dividends. A quick look at their financial statements doesn't seem to support that rumor. There are no entries under cash flow from financing activities that indicate they are borrowing money. They seem to paying the dividend from their operations and then making up the rest with cash on hand. The cash account balance has been trending lower over many years. The sentiment expressed by the rumor does seem to have some merit since the way they seem to be paying their dividends is not sustainable long term.

Place bets that rumor began just a few months ago, started by none other than NGC, let the wars continue!

Compared to what some other companies are paying in dividends, this kind of payout is surprisingly high and certainly doesn't look sustainable.
Most of my brokerage portfolio is in mutual funds, but in my earlier days of stock trading (when I worked for a brokerage firm), the concept of dividends felt like a joke anyway -- it was a pittance compared to the value of the stock itself; you'd have to own a boatload of stock for the dividends to be worth anything in themselves. But then, it was the (first) dot-com era.

Quote: Place bets that rumor began just a few months ago, started by none other than NGC, let the wars continue! Actually I heard it on the CLCT message boards posted by a major holder of their stock. Now this person could easily have an ulterior motive and be spreading false news. Their dividend yield is high as is their stock price. CLCT does know how to keep their revenues up and a key method is grade-flation, especially for their high volume big-dollar submitters.

Yeah I wouldn't touch it now. This is a short squeeze. I'm going start listening in on their conference calls. I have noticed a sharp reduction in the amount of newly slabbed NGC coins at Heritage Auctions in the last 2 months.
I think tightening up grading standards hurt NGC with the major auction houses. Makes me want to send in my recently graded NGC coins into PCGS but so will every other schmuck.
And so the grade-flation trend marches on. Not good for the hobby but great for PCGS.

Too narrow of a company for me. I'd stick with something that's more diversified than just coins. Nice dividend though but VZ and T has near that dividend as well. Or you can buy SBUX that has split on average every 4-5 years over the past 25 years.
