I bought a lot on ebay for $81 and it finally came in the mail today. To my pleasant surprise there was over 5 oz of silver in it. As far as I can tell this was once some body's full coin collection. I told the wife and she said "Some one sent you all their coins? I don't get it." That's when I decided to post here.

1943 Australian Shilling. This coin looks uncirculated, but has poor detail on the right ram's horn. Were they poorly stuck during that time?

1323 Iranian 10 Rial. The Iranians never struck their coins well:

1957 Netherlands Gulden. This coin is blindingly white:

St Pierre and Miquelon 1 & 2 Francs. The funny thing is that I just bought these coins a week ago. Now I have doubles.

It's from the San Francisco mint. Blame the Americans.

Hey, I guess you are going to blame the war in Iraq on us, too. Oh, yea, , well you can't blame Enron on us.

Those are very nice for a world coin lot. Looks like you you have a mystery on your hands.

To me the mystery is why or how someone's coin collection ended up in a world coin lot on e-bay. To me its interesting and gets the imagination pumping.

No mysteries. These come up on ebay more often than you think. It takes daily searching over multiple phrases to come up with the good ones, but they're out there. You just need to know how to weed out the real ones from the dealers lots disguised to look like collections. I usually find 3-6 a year where I bid to win. About 4 months ago I won what looked to be the collection of a WWII soldier. Mostly early 20th century western European coins in an old metal first aid kit. To think about the circumstances that those coins were collected under was cool.

I'm tempted to post a link to the auction as proof, but I don't want to advertise what I've been buying lately or how much I've spent for it.

Very cool Snowman! Sounds like you have a good technique working with e-bay searches. The WWII collection in a first aid tin sounds really cool and I truly believe you so no need to post the auction as proof

...but I am jealous.

These lots are definitely worth searching for, but you don't have to find them just on ebay.

I know a few months ago, when I was making my weekly trip to my favourite coin store, I happened to walk in while a customer was there selling. This happens often in good coin stores; people sell coins, collectibles, and precious metals.

This particular lot was from a gentleman who'd just had a relative pass away, and he neither cared nor was interested in what was in the lot. It took three or four hours for the Coin Store rep to go through everything, and in the end most of it was just worth face value. But there were some odds and ends that were interesting and were bought by the store.

Since I was sitting there anyway, and the guys know that I'm very interested in world coins, they offered me about six pounds of foreign coins at five dollars a pound. (The shop mostly deals with US coins.) I paid that price eagerly; I had seen about 8 crown sized coins in there all with silver content. Figured I was getting a great deal.

After I went through that particular bag, I had more than a great deal. I figure the bag was worth at least ten times what I paid for it, although I still haven't gone through and seriously investigated every single coin.

There were several Mexican Revolution coins, tonnes of silver Islamic coins, a coin from German Kiauchou, a handful of 1800s coins from varying countries, a nice batch of 1 & 2 sen Japanese coins from the early 19oos & 189os, and a whole lot more. :)

I'm rambling, but the point of the story is; yeah. These lots are out there.
