PCGS graded my coin as "UNC Details" with "Machine Damage". I thought it would grade an MS-66 or MS-66+ and even got the True-view imaging service with it. https://images.PCGS.com/TrueView/83143154So what do you think? Is PCGS just being very harsh because I used the modern service and not regular, or does it really have machine damage? Edited by Modern Coin Collector 04/12/2017 12:45 am

first off, I had trouble with that link pix, wasn't quite clear enough when expanded to tell, circled what appears to be either MD or just the focus blur, cannot distinguish, sorry.

are you circling what you think is machine damage? or Machine Doubling? I don't see any roller damage

Steele, pix would not clear up when blown up, circled areas of POSSIBLE MD, but just may be angle/lighting/focus...?

Eh, it could be Machine Doubling, but does that details a coin? After I read OP's inquiry, I expected to see roller lines somewhere, and I see none of that.

I have 2-3 Ikes with the same "machine damage" details grade, and I too am wondering where it is on my coins. I also have a 1958 Jefferson nickel, that could be an MS65 FS, but it has the "machine damage" designation as well! Ugh!

Does PCGS have a page (somewhere) that explains the designations it gives? Is Machine Damage the same as Machine Doubling?

Looking at the largest image download, I am seeing some arced incuse lines through the hair above the ear. The face seems a little beat up in places, too. Again, this is with the largest image. I cannot imagine them being visible in hand without magnification.

jbuck, that's probably it then. I don't notice the lines in hand but I can see them under magnification. In hand, it's a really nice coin.

I see the lines and hits jbuck mentioned under the max image. I still don't understand how that details a coin. Why don't the hits and marks just lower the grade to me 60-62? What about something like this? It has hits and marks and still straight graded. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1976-D-IKE-...AOSwpkFY5EicNice looking coin, sorry for your bad luck with the grade!

I ran across this coin on ebay, and I too was wondering where the damage was located. I see what jbuck is seeing with the hair. It looks rough. I have a 73-S that has similar damage to the hair area, but it graded clean. It's one nasty gash, and it looks like the eyebrow took a hit too. - jbuck is glad he didn't buy this from me. Can't blame him either.

I remember that one. Quote: I still don't understand how that details a coin. Why don't the hits and marks just lower the grade to me 60-62? Yes, I think a hit is a hit. It should have just lowered the grade, not been given details. Oh well.
