Turns out the former owner of this piece is one of Canada's great military heroes of Victorian era...
Harold Lothrop Borden (H.L.) was the only son of Canada's defense minister, Sir Frederick William Borden. Mr. Borden served with distinction as a lieutenant in Second Boer War in South Africa, and was killed while leading a charge in the Battle of Wiltpoort. Mr. Borden's legacy has been honored at numerous locations, including the Harold Borden Monument in his home town of Canning, Nova Scotia.
