Hi,
I have
inherited a collection (about three file folder boxes) of coins from my father's aunt about 10 years ago. She used to work for the United Nations in Washington and used to travel extensively.
I have been cataloguing on and off for the past 10 years. I started with the most obvious or easiest ones (larger), which are mostly done. For example, the USA Silver dollars (Morgan, Peace, Ike, Susan) which were fun to catalogue because I (of course) thought each was a most splendid example possibly worth millions (they are not). But that was the easy part.
For example, yesterday I divided about 15$ worth of Canadian Pennies into decades minted. I got a few really nice 1938s and 1948s, and even a 1984 with what I think is a Rotated Die. I will ask about that in appropriate forum.
The day before was separating about 3 ziplock bags full of miscellaneous world money. Mostly from 1940s-1980s. Now what do I do with 15 Italian 100L coins from the 1980s? I will ask about that in appropriate forum, too.
I love cataloguing and researching. I have yet to buy coins, because I am not confident about buying coins and because I don't really know where to go from/with this collection I have now. I have heard it is best to specialize? I am definitely looking into getting to know how to sell the "one-offs", in order to streamline the collection (is that a good idea?).
I will be happy for you guy's and gal's advice.
