1837 Large Cent For Grading (Scratch?)

I recently bought This large cent for $51 from 192157793166 and reluctantly paid for it after having gotten assurance from the seller that the mark to the right of the date is not a scratch, but rather, a die crack.

What do you guys think in terms of grade, and whether that mark is a scratch? I may return it if it's not as described.

Is that line over the 8 a scratch though?

Sorry, paid about $20 too much.cleaned quite bad IMO

Why did you bid/ offer in the first place if you don't like ti at that price?

Well, if anything you can return it as it is NOT XF but you should have known that even though the pictures in the auction were darkened up to hide some of the nicks and dings.

Return it. It's been harshly cleaned, and is not XF, as others have stated. I doubt it is a die crack, though maybe a lam error on the side?

I think you can buy a much nicer coin for $51.

In my opinion it is not a die crack. I see varieties with the obverse die crack across stars 2-4 and also reverse die crack around America and none have a die crack to the right of the date.

As I have told you, this is the N-15 variety, which is rated at R-3. On top of that, this is a pretty scarce die state of that variety, so you do have a premium that will probably mitigate the scratches.

I don't think it has been cleaned. I think the seller used too much direct light and possibly lightened the photos. It will look better in hand.
