Hi all, I am new to the forum and coin collecting as well so please excuse me if I am posting this in the wrong forum. I was going through a roll of 43 steel wheat cents and this coin stood out to me. It looks to me that the D mint mark is much higher into the date than the other coins in my roll. Just wondering if there is any value to it. Thanks in advance for any info-

Lincoln Cents are modern coins, so I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

Hi WestGhost, welcome to the forum.

Mintmark placement usually doesn't command a premium except in certain exceptional instances. Generally, unless the mintmark were touching the date or was seriously misaligned, it's considered normal enough.

That said, I have been speculating to myself for a while that mintmark placement may become increasingly popular to collect, if still niche. The 1975 high D nickel has relatively recently achieved some notoriety. Perhaps other coins with poorly placed marks, along the lines of yours here, will follow in its footsteps.

Oijogja, Thank you very much for your expertise. Looks like I'll just hold on to this one for a while-

to CCF hope you will be with us for a long while.

You might find something now and then with odd mm placement, but what is in the past is all you have. The mm's are now part of the master die.

@Oijogja I have been looking for one of those 1975 high D nickels myself - no luck yet

I hope you don't mind that I cropped and enlarged your image in order to show the MM placement a little more clearly. I don't know why, but I find this date/MM very interesting.

It interests me, too. I'd keep it for its curiosity factor in addition to being a Wheat cent. It's probably just a shadow or something, but I keep wanting to check more closely to see if the upper left of the D shows itself to be an RPM.

For that year they were placing the MM up higher not like what we see in 50's. The original coin image rotation is off a bit other than that might be an RPM - but that area of this hobby I am not familiar with.

I thought your idea to crop it closer was a great Idea. I did a little more to it. Straightened it out and did B/W since that is usually what I see for this year.

It is misplaced in higher position but not uncommon.
