Hi firejones1814, welcome to the forum. The doubling on the S in STATES is Mechanical Doubling, not a doubled die. This is why you haven't been able to turn up any info on one. But keep looking, you never know what hasn't been found yet!

Aye, Machine Doubling on the S in STATES, as well as the ONE CENT.

Don't worry fj, it takes a while to train your brain to distinguish what's going. We're glad to help explain if you have questions. I'm not sure what you mean when you say they're the same thickness as the lettering on top. Are you saying that the doubled elements are just as tall as the other parts?
Rest in Peace

FireJones

Here's a few examples of just what Mechanical(machine) Doubling looks like and then what real doubled dies lokk like.

What I think firejones is referring to can best be seen on the E and N of CENT where the MD narrows as it reaches the top of the letters. I think that is just what you get when the die shifts rotationally. The outermost devices will be affected more and the MD will lessen the farther toward the centerpoint you go.
