1. 2. That coin does not appear to be genuine. 3. It is the style of 1799 silver dollar not gold. 4. If you are trying to sell it here, I suggest that you read the forum's rules for buying and selling. Edit: to demonstrate, your coin depicts an eagle grasping sticks in it's right claw. It should be holding arrows. Many other things are off, but that right there should seal its fate.

to CCF! Unfortunately it's fake. You can see pictures of the genuine (silver) coin here: http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/Hierar...Bust+Dollar. If you compare them, all of the details are wrong. It's probably a souvenir/reproduction that your grandfather bought. These were often sold at historical sites like Colonial Williamsburg. So I'd save it as a memory of him.

MrQurma! By the wear on the edges of the rim you can see a "silvery" color where the plating has come off. This is a cast coin of unknown material, suggest it may be magnetic, which neither gold nor silver coins are. Most likely the "gold" is a cheap gold plating or "goldtone", the stuff used on watches. It is not a very accurate copy as has been pointed out. I always say look at the stars to check first for authenticity!

Welcome to the CCF!
Unfortunately, your Grandfather left you a modern Chinese counterfeit/replica coin that is worth absolutely nothing.

The best part ...inherited from my grandfather........should read imported by my self. The scourge of Chinese counterfeits and their utterance just gets goofier and goofier. We do a collectors market near Vancouver Canada every Sunday and see these " inherited coins" on a continuous basis.

Are you sure it wasn't " inherited" from a scam artist in Nigeria?
