I just created this account here as per suggestion by someone I know. I have the best NGC graded 1889 Proof set in the NGC registry, but the part in question is the Morgan dollar because it has a scratched die reverse (showing as a raised check Mark on the reverse by the T in UNITED). I sent the coin along with the rest of the set back to NGC last year for a regrade and variety attribution, but they wouldn't label the dollar as such. I have searched far and wide as well as showing several major players to get someone to label it. I am looking to see if anyone here has an answer to my problems. I have included pictures of the coin to help clarify this a little better. Also, sorry for the poor spelling as my phone seems to autocorrect to what it believes that I am saying. I'm hoping that the picture was added. The picture is of the whole reverse sorry, but they wouldn't let me download only the one part. The apparent scratch between the eagle and the wreath was on the previous slab and is not there now.

Dave700x no, I have not tried there. I have however tried to get a hold of Leroy Van Allen with no luck though.

You may want to join VAMworld and get the more knowledgeable members there to look at this. They may recommend you sent it to LVA. Best of luck and keep us posted.

There are at least two obverse for 1889 proof. The 1st die can be identified by die scratches inside T of LIBERTY on the Obverse. The 2nd die can be identified by a couple of parallel die scratches inside the void space at end of phyrigian cap band.

I think only ANACS that will give you VAM attribution on the slab. PCGS and NGC does not recognized them unless they are "listed" VAM such as TOP100, HOT50, etc.

AU90o it isn't really the obverse in question on the coin it is the reverse. The coin is of course genuine and to cross it over would be bad given the registry and the rest of the set. Such a dilemma
