OK I have spoken with a few people that are into verities and I am told "NO Doubled Die" coins exist in the type coin.

I know what Strike Doubling is and what it looks like, and this doesn't look to be a strike double to me. But I would like opinions.

The coin is an 1998 S Special Proof in SP-69 note that the date and TRUST are the only sections that look doubled like this. the balance of the coin is solid and as strong as 3 acers of garlic.

PS I will be at work for the next 9 hours so I will not be able to respond.

Thanks Russ

Looks like mild MD. Note the sizes of the devices are not increase, probably reduced by the MD. If you made a side by side of a normal coin and yours showing the same devices, you would probably see that is the case. If not, I'll be watching to see what you conclusion is on your coin. (post results either way as this would an educational tool for others also reading this thread.

My thoughts on the Machine Doubling, at first glance are its a proof strike. The verbiage of Proof Strike is a bit misleading, as proofs are pressed. But I am not completely sure of the striking or pressing process on this type coin. If a coin is pressed I would think Strike Doubling could not happen as the 2 dies are truly in a fixed position and the coin is not ejected into the hammer die like one would see in lets say a Peace dollar.

I think it's Machine Doubling, as well. Proof coins are struck twice, so it could be slight misalignment occurred between strikes instead of during ejection.

Here is a side by side of a 1972-S Silver Proof half dollar with Machine damage compared with a normal coin side by side:

Note the MD reduced the devices a bit. A doubled die would have enlarged the devices.
