This came to me in a job lot, and I'm just curious if it is anything special. All the others I see on ebay are much worse grades and they still are fetching a fair price. This one I have has the roses still in detail on either side of the X and at the 12 o clock position.

What are everyone's opinions, higher than XF-40?

As always, much appreciated in advance.

Does not appear to be anywhere close to a 40. 20 tops. Always remember age has nothing to do with grading. 20 is actually fairly high for this type.

Thanks for the reply Moxking. It's just that I can't find a better grade version to compare it to...

I vote for higher than VF-20.

Looking at the last picture, the vertical lines are all well defined, the tips of the castles have limited blending, the central dots are quite apparent, and the top of the crown looks very detailed. The main problem I see is with the band of the crown, but that looks too "worn" to be wear, comparing it to the rest of the coin. Maybe just weakly struck? With the first side, there is obvious wear on the leaves; however, looking at whole lot of different examples of this type on MA-Shops, most do not have the separation this one has. And look at how detailed those flowers are too. This is quite the nice coin!

As for the question on if this is higher than EF-40: it might be, but I personally would not go higher. I do not have much experience with this series, but I do prefer at least some lustre on coins EF-45 or above, which I do not see on this coin. But then again, copper coins do turn brown. Hmm... I will still settle down at the safer side and say EF-40. I just hope the green stuff around the last A in GRATIA is not damaging this coin.

MA-Shops links for comparisons!

*Same dates always seem the best to compare against, which this is. Alas, it is not of the same variety (IOSEPHUS instead of JOSEPHUS).
**I would not grade this coin EF, unlike the person listing it.
