Hey. I purchased this quarter eagle several months ago. I am unsure in how to grade these, so I relinquish it to the experts. What grade would you give, and estimated value?

Thanks,
John

Hi Johnny,
This coin has obvious wear on the Indian's headband (the thing with the zigzag line) and the poofy part of the headdress (I don't know the official name for that!). The top of the eagle's left wing and left leg also show wear. I'll throw out an EF-45 grade for this one. On the plus side, there are relatively few marks and I don't see any obvious cleaning signs.

These coins contain about 0.12 oz of pure gold, so if gold holds at $900 per ounce your Indian is worth about $110 for bullion value. Indian gold trades for comfortably above bullion. The PCGS price guide shows $240 for common Indian quarter eagles in EF-40 but that is an inflated price. I'd guess this one might be a good buy at about $175-$200.
