I have a 1873 Indian cent with this problem, just wondering if there was any way to remove the green residue (corrosion/pvc) that sometimes builds up on these coins.

The coin is too far gone , what ever you do to it ,it will always be a details coin . But if you want to play with it , give it a 24 hour soak in Acetone then go with the Verdi-care .
My guess is that it is a good learning coin. The hard green oxide left after chemical soaks will likely have to be scraped off leaving a rough surface. Search some of the other "cleaning" posts for similar experiences.
