Coins are plated all the time both as science experiments and to make the "special" commemoratives sold on TV et al.

They damage the coin and make it work face, nothing more.

It's a novelty item, but it's a nice one. Usually if they've been circulated, they are scratched. Keep it if you like it. I keep odd stuff.
