Can't be a Cud because a Cud always includes the rim. Looks like maybe a die clash. John1

The bottom picture it looks like raised lines like you perhaps see in a doubled die but the top photo it looks more like scratching like coin damage/coin gouge.. in the appearance in person does it look raised?

also.. the two lines below the larger Cud.. is what looks like the D..the rest sort of funnels outwards..if that makes any sense

Based on their length and shape they look like doubling of the folded sails to the right, but that is pretty far away.. I would also have to lean towards die clash with John..I don't know how to do that fancy picture over picture trick to look at die clashes.. :(

The area in question is not in a clash area. It is part of the field. So if that area is raised, then it might be a die gouge in that area. Or it might be a DDR. So far I can't exactly see what it is a duplicate of yet. I just checked Wexler's site and nothing is listed for the reverse on that year yet. But get some better images and post email them to him and see what he thinks? Email on his home page.

Coop I think you nailed it with that overlay.. it does look like wavy details of Washington's hair in between those sails..

The only problem is that a clash affects only the fields. Also if it were a clash why are not more devices affected? The hair is deeper into the die and would not make contact on that area. It might be one of the two things I suggested earlier a gouge or hub doubling. (hoping for the second one) Here is a good size to crop it to for size: Upper left corner would be the bottom of the '7' on the date. Right lower corner of the top of the ship squared and sized to 1000 pixels square.

I did a quick little side by side of the area with the overlay that coop posted. Could it be doubled from the bottom part of the folded sail?
