I'm sure New1954 and a few others who feel very strongly about this topic could get a good laugh.

So here it is:

Canada-$20-Silver-Coin-2017---The-Clamshell---Collectors-Appreciation

But going forward, what should the RCM do? Any coin over $100, $200, $300... should have a special box?

Personally, back in the days when I had lots of NCLTs I preferred "similar" boxes because they all stacked up and well aligned. The cassette tape boxes were good for that.

What about something like the proof and specimen sets where the coin could be inserted with a slab similar to what TPGs provide? In principle, you could buy/sell the slab or just the case. This is just a quick rendition of this concept:

I would allow the slab to be opened just like the sets. I'd leave that up to the collector to seal the slab...

Or we have the capsule inserted inside a simple holder that can flip. Just some ideas...

Another idea would be to have something like the iPad where the velvety cover can fold in different configuration for display purposes.

On the $200 for $200 the RCM did try the flip concept but unfortunately the lid doesn't fold out in any useful way. The box is too tall for no reason and the capsule is too loose inside the box so the coin could fall off when flipping the cover.

But all those things would cost money... and would raise the price of already hugely marked up coins.

Noticed the recursive engraving/image of the clamshell?

A first in numismatics maybe?

@canadian-coins

Yes I did notice and I believe that you should submit this to the RCM! They may actually buy the idea of the clamshell within a clamshell "recursive" theme. By the way, your other ideas on packaging coins are great. Easy way to display with the stand:))))))))

The cassette tape boxes were good for that.

Regrettably, I think, at the time, I was one of the opponents of the 'cassette boxes' that the mint was using. But, thinking back, I could fit about 40 of those into a shoe box size plastic container.

The clamshells have now been around for over a decade. At the time, I thought the presentation for the coin was much better appreciated - especially if it was a gift, but, certainly, for a collector, they have been a puzzle to:

a) display your coins in groups or themes
b) store coins

@Dcadon

RCM needs to revamp their packaging. A subscription for a series needs a custom box to encase these coins. 5 clamshells with black sleeves for a series is unacceptable! If RCM's concern is that people will cancel once they receive the box, then they should issue the custom packaging with the last coin.

The recent "Honours" series from the Mint is a prime example of disappointment. Honouring this "Honour" series with a custom case and packaging would have been a definite buy for me for this 150th anniversary. Instead you get 4 clamshells with black sleeves. I would have paid a premium, with the subscription, to get the custom packaging. Maybe this is something the RCM should consider. Just my opinion.

@New1954 - Back in the days the RCM gave the option to buy the $350 gold coins without the fancy metal case. That allowed the buyers to save something like $50 if I remember.

Case in point: I ended up selling all my $350 coins and cases separately because the cases were selling very well, as much as $100 ea.!

Then the RCM switched to the cheap cigarette cases... but I stopped buying expensive coins anyway.
